The life and art of abstract artist Mark Rothko are examined through the inquiring mind of an art student. This survey of his work was taken from a retrospective assembled by the Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art. The film traces the progression of Rothko's work from figuration in the 1920's to biomorphism and surrealism in the '30s and '40s, and to his mature and best-known color fields from the 1960's..
