Birmingham, Alabama, a steeltown founded by a nothern industrialist decades after slavery ended, seemed to be a relic of the antebellum South. The U.S. Supreme Coourt had decided in favor of racial equality with Brown vs. the Board of Education. But Birmingham -- as late as the 1960's -- remained "the citadel of southern segregation." Consequently, the town became a symbol of what the civil rights activists were up against in the struggle for Black freedom and justice.
