TekTek is the story of Mark, a 13-year-old boy addicted to the internet, and especialy online "chatting." It is his whole life. Taking the online nickname of TekTek, he's up half the night -- or longer -- typing on his keyboard, chatting with his many online friends. His attachment to the Internet, and his mother's resulting frustration at the situation, lead to increasing tension at home and a painful lesson about chat rooms. Though TekTek is a work of fiction, it is a peek at the very real perils of a growing internet subculture. At its best, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), or its various cousins on commercial online serviecs, allows for individuals around the world to experience a form of social and professional interaction with strangers. Like-minded individuals, who might never have met otherwise, can form lasting friendships across national and international boundaries. Online chat, however, allows the individual to create a nearly undetectable alter-ego in which age, sex or personality can be radically changed. A deceptive relationship can continue for years, or even lead to life-threatening or fatal meetings in person, as in the recent case of 13-year-old Christina Long. Christina met Saul Dos Reis in an online chat room. She was subsequently murdered by Dos Reis after they met face to face. He was later arrested and now faces federal charges that could carry the death penalty. TekTek reminds teachers and parents to set guidelines for young people communicating online.
