At Brest-Litovsk, on the border between Poland, and the former Soviet Union, the gauge on the train tracks radically changes: to move beyond Belorussia, the tracks must be wider. Building upon this profound metaphor, writer-director Marcel Lozinski probes the eyes of the passengers on international trains as they witness the changing of wheels under the train cars: do they sense that they’re leaving one world to enter another? What kinds of fear, anxiety, anticipation are running through their minds? How do they feel about what they are leaving behind and what they will meet ahead?

89mm from Europe is the most famous production of Film Studio "Kalejdoskop", one of Poland’s first independent studios, launched at the begining of 1989. The film has garnered awards at the prestigious film festivals of Oberhausen, Marseilles, Berlin,Montreal, Hamburg, among others. It is an excellent example not only of the tradition in Polish filmmaking exemplified by Andrzej Wajda, but of the new generation of filmmakers struggling with the changes in political alliance and doctrine of 1989.
