In late April of 1945 the capital of Hitler's Germany was within the sights of the Red Army. Seizing Berlin was of the utmost importance for the Soviet Union, having the suffered the worst of Allied casualties at the hands of the Nazis, by most accounts numbering in excess of 20 million soldiers and civilians. Hitler’s refusal to surrender had made seizing Berlin an imperative. But Joseph Stalin also foresaw that possession of Berlin would have long-term strategic consequences for post-war Europe.

Taking a city is one of the most difficult military objectives, but the Red Army was willing to pay the price. Marshal Georgi Zhukov's ensuing offensive in the Seelow Heights was the final battle which broke the German Army's defensive capability. After April 19, the way to Berlin was open, and the city was encircled by April 23. Hitler committed suicide two weeks later, and the war in Europe was over.
