Documents the determination of a group of ordinary women from a small American town who band together to influence national public policy and and foreign relations. To penetrate the abstract and bureaucratic world of international policy-making, the women develop a tangible and enchanting expression of their desire for peace: quiltmaking. In a moving cinema verite style, A Stitch for Time presents the idea that ordinary people can become diplomats working toward the goal of world peace. Interviews with the Boise, Idaho women who made the quilt establish the background for the project and reveal that though some are longtime activists, others have never been politically involved, but all are united by their need to ensure a safe world for their children and society. The National Peace Quilt is based on designs taken from drawings by children from every state. By encouraging all 100 U.S. Senators to spend at least one night under the quilt, the women were assured that that country`s policymakers would devote time to thinking exclusively about world peace. The film follows the quilt as it travels successfully from senator to senator, fulfilling the simple and symbolic plan. The film offers new inspiration for grassroots activists everywhere and empowers all people to assume responsibility for the future.
